Digital Twin Technology for Smart Water Networks

OpenFlows WaterOPS is a real-time operational and optioneering decision support solution for urban water supply and distribution. Integrating live SCADA data with a calibrated hydraulic model, OpenFlows WaterOPS computes real-time conditions throughout water networks, based on existing conditions and forecasted future conditions. OpenFlows WaterOPS empowers water utilities to instantaneously gain better visibility into dark data between monitored locations, predict future performance, and react to events and emergencies.

Operators and operations engineers can confidently share and collaborate with stakeholders by evaluating various what-if actions when quick decisions are needed due to a fire, pipe break, pump outage, or other time-critical events. Moreover, the software can determine network impact and the ensuing effects these events will have on customers.

  • Manage emergency response

    • ​Hydraulic modelers, planners, and operators can use a network model to test variations in operational strategy, tactics, and emergency protocols in a risk-free way. Identify safe, inexpensive options to improve the resilience and daily management of water distribution and transmission networks.
  • Manage water security

    • Use a water distribution hydraulic model to assess and examine physical infrastructure to determine areas of vulnerability. Protect against potential natural, accidental, or purposeful contamination that will compromise the system's ability to reliably deliver safe water to customers.
  • Manage pressure

    • ​Use a hydraulic network model to automatically determine accurate pressure zones based upon pressure boundaries and large consumers. Identify potential areas to reduce pressures without disrupting service. Avoid unwanted high pressures causing excessive leakage and pipe break incidents.
  • Manage energy use

    • Model pumps accurately using hydraulic modeling, including complex pump combinations and variable speed pumps, to understand the impact that different pump operational strategies have on energy usage. Minimize energy related to pumping costs while maximizing system performance.​​​​
  • Monitor and assess network conditions

    • ​Use a water data model with GIS and hydraulic model to monitor and predict the condition and performance of pipes and pumps from inspection, incident, and intervention records. After identifying and prioritizing problems, analyze alternative remedial measures and take proactive corrective actions.
  • Simulate water quality

    • Simulate water quality characteristics throughout the pipe network and within tanks. Evaluate water age or constituent (for example, chlorine, contaminant, TDS) concentration, even with multiple interacting species. Perform source tracing to determine the contribution of various water sources for any location in the system.

  • Elevate engineering and operations efficiency

    • Streamline interdepartmental work-sharing with actionable insights for water networks. Remove barriers created by traditional engineering functions so that your organization can track, share, and collaborate on network data efficiently.
