Project
The Duyun-Shangri-La Expressway will link and provide travelers with a direct route to Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces. The CNY 20 billion project is nearly 97 kilometers in length and features 65 bridges, 17 tunnels, eight interchanges, and numerous auxiliary roadway services. Strict owner safety requirements of the route design scheme and a high number of subcontractors, which were difficult to manage in a unified manner, were some of the challenges that China Highway Engineering Consulting Group faced on this project. Additionally, because the design and construction teams were in different locations, the project team needed to work in an open, connected data environment to improve communication among the multidiscipline teams.
Solution
China Highway Engineering Consulting Group implemented a collaborative 3D BIM and reality modeling strategy to manage the large number of subcontractors on the project. Using ProjectWise to manage the design data and unify the configuration of enterprise-level and project-level standard files allowed team members to communicate and collaborate in an efficient manner during the design process. Using an open, connected data environment, all project participants are assured safe and quick access to project data through a web interface and a wide area network.
Outcome
Implementing an integrated BIM workflow and using reality modeling technology saved the project team 10 million in costs, reduced design time by one month, and shortened safety evaluation by 10 days. The project team also reduced the overall cost of the design process by 20%, and the on-site technology presentations performed in the construction management process improved the quality of the project. Moreover, the collaborative workflow reduced the cost of managing the project by 30% to improve return on investment.
Software
The design team used ProjectWise to collaborate and obtain relevant information quickly and easily to save time. ContextCapture processed aerial images of the site to create a 3D reality mesh. Descartes was used to map the terrain, and the models were exported from LumenRT to create a visualization of the expressway that could demonstrate to the owner and other stakeholders how the project will look when completed. In the construction stage, the team used OpenRoads to create construction diagram models, which were published as iModels and uploaded to a B/S architecture-based project management system. Navigator facilitated clash detection and generated iModels, which significantly reduced error rates.
