Project

Located in the City of London, the Bank-Monument station is one of the most complex subterranean railway stations in the United Kingdom, used by more than 52 million passengers each year. Estimates show that well over 100,000 passengers use the station during peak times, totaling just under 400,000 journeys each weekday. In 2013, it was decided that the Bank-Monument station required an upgrade to improve passenger access, circulation, and interchange, with the goal of providing an additional 45 percent capacity during peak hours. Dragados SA and the London Underground Limited were jointly tasked with overseeing the planning, design, and construction of this GBP 6.07 billion upgrade. The project team faced a complex design challenge in upgrading the Bank-Monument station’s intricate net of tunnels, shafts, and galleries, especially given its location in the heart of the City of London. It was also required that the station remain open during construction without any significant transportation delays.

Solution

To ensure that these project participants could easily work together and had access to information across all project stages, Dragados and London Underground used ProjectWise to bring their teams and content together. The project had 425 individual users from more than 30 different companies, including design team members, outside contractors, and project stakeholders. Bentley’s Connected Data Environment based on ProjectWise became a hub of collaboration and a single source of truth on the project, keeping the team focused on their design work and on delivering results.   

Outcome

By working in ProjectWise’s collaborative environment, Dragados and London Underground streamlined workflows and collaboration, leading to 95 percent of first time package approval by the client. Bentley applications helped solve 92 percent of clashes during detail design during 300 clash exercises completed in just 4 days. By leveraging ProjectWise and Bentley’s other applications, the project has been successful, owing to enhanced collaboration among all project participants and the consistent management of design content across the project. Currently in the construction phase, the team is on time to complete the project by May 2022.

Software

ProjectWise housed approximately 1,800 3D models and almost 4,800 drawings produced during the project’s design phase. By using the application, team members improved how all these models and drawings were managed. ProjectWise helped facilitate the controlled exchange of graphical data between project participants, as well as creating a traceable approval process. When compared to other projects’ electronic document management systems, the team found that ProjectWise consumed five times less staff resources when managing the same number of files.
