Renovating a Road for Economic Development

Xixian New Area is a national-level, 882-kilometer economic development zone under way in Shaanxi. Century Avenue, a 4.3-kilometer road, will become the main artery for the district. To improve the link between the cities of Xi’an and Xianyang within the district, as well as to prepare for an increase in road traffic due to booming economic development, the district initiated a CNY 3.2 billion renovation and upgrade to be headed by CSCEC AECOM Consultants Co., Ltd. Building in the urban area required relocating pipelines and avoiding any interference with the nearby subway line. Even with the complex details, they needed to deliver a high-quality design within a short deadline.

Transitioning from 2D to 3D Design

CSCEC AECOM realized that 2D design would not efficiently design the project within the deadline and budget. With BIM technology, they could unite the specialized work under all project disciplines into a federated 3D model. Digital modeling would enable them to optimize the design and determine how to work around the pipeline, subway, and urban environment. To fully meet the project goals, the model would also need to incorporate detailed asset information, so that it could be used to improve ongoing operations and maintenance. Additionally, they needed the ability to model specific details, such as the unusual curved surface of the overpass ceilings, undertake pipe corridor analysis conflict resolution, and perform accurate measurements of engineering quantities. The design team sought a set of applications that could model all aspects of the project seamlessly.

Unifying all Disciplines in a Federated Model

After studying potential options, CSCEC AECOM realized that they could meet all project goals with Bentley applications. Since the applications are open and interoperable, the design team integrated them with the organization’s familiar management platform. Within that unified environment, they used ContextCapture to create a reality model of the project site, then used OpenBridge Designer, OpenBuildings, and OpenRoads Designer to model all elements of the project, determine how to integrate new work alongside the pipelines and subway, and incorporate green spaces. Since all disciplines could collaborate, designers were able to optimize connections, resolve clashes, and eliminate multiple design problems before construction began. LumenRT enabled them to create interactive experiences of the project, helping them clearly communicate the design intent to all stakeholders and manage conflicts between the project and the surrounding environment.

Boosting Efficiency while Improving the Design

Enabling all contributors to work within a unified environment made the process more efficient and improved the design. Using accurate measurements of real-world conditions, CSCEC AECOM determined how to improve the original design, including by reducing the buried depth of the pipeline corridor, which saved more than CNY 1 million. Additionally, performing clash and clearance distance analysis on the pipeline network improved design efficiency by 30%. Powerful digital design capabilities helped them develop an aesthetically pleasing curved design for the overpass ceilings, which would have been impossible with 2D design. In total, going digital reduced design changes by more than 60%, shortened design time by 45 days, and saved more than CNY 10 million, while providing a solid foundation for digital management of the project throughout its lifecycle.
