Multidiscipline Design Team Required a Robust Project Collaboration System

The second phase of Neusoft Medical Systems Co., Ltd.’s production line expansion project located in Shenyang is a large industrial and civil project that comprises three multistoried buildings, spanning over 63,000 square meters, in addition to numerous utility systems. The CNY 290 million project is characterized by a complex architectural concrete frame and steel structure. The size of the project required a multidiscipline design team, which meant that Shenyang Aluminum & Magnesium Engineering & Research Institute (SAMI), a leader in the implementation of digital twin technology and the designer on the project, had to search for and implement powerful collaborative software. The quality and depth of modeling had to be of a high level of precision and contain accurate statistics of all mechanical and electrical facilities. Lastly, SAMI faced a tight schedule that was reduced from 12 months to eight months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with model delivery due in three months.

Laying the Foundation for Building a Intelligent Digital Factory

SAMI determined that the traditional 2D design process they used on previous civil projects would be inadequate to ensure that they produced a high-quality design. Therefore, SAMI knew that they would need to create digital twin models of the project to improve the design quality and implement a digital workflow to meet the revised delivery schedule. Moreover, they wanted to provide the client with a complete set of digital twin models and lay the foundation for building an intelligent digital factory.

Full-featured Digital Twin Models Enable Project Visualization

SAMI turned to Bentley’s digital twin technology to create their models and establish digital workflows, which helped them improve the quality of their designs and increase their efficiency. The ground-breaking software produced full-featured digital twin models that enabled SAMI to visualize the project and optimize the configuration plan. The digital twin model along with SYNCHRO 4D accelerated the construction schedule and helped the team meet its tight deadline. Leveraging the digital twin models with SYNCHRO’s statistics function enable the team to accurately determine the engineering materials quantities. Additionally, the application’s interoperability enabled SAMI to import the design models with third-party software. ProjectWise, Bentley’s collaboration software, was also used to enable a digital workflow across the design team and allow for easy access to project information.

Linking 3D Models to Construction Schedule Saves Time and Project Costs

Implementing Bentley’s digital applications empowered SAMI to create the digital twins from 3D models and link them to the construction schedule using SYNCHRO 4D. To limit the facility’s environmental impact, SAMI also used the digital models to perform lighting and heat dissipation analysis as well as water-balance calculation on the buildings, which helped to eliminate wastewater and gas waste discharges while enhancing the buildings’ lighting and ventilation. The technology allowed SAMI to shorten the construction schedule by 300 hours, which saved over CNY 3 million in construction costs.
