    The Corgo River Valley Viaduct

Project Summary

LCW Consult, SA (LCW) was retained to design the EUR 80 million Corgo River Valley Viaduct extending the Transmontana highway across the Corgo River, while preserving the view of the valley. The long viaduct was divided into three continuous west, central, and east sections, with ground clearances ranging from 50 to 230 meters. To enable LCW to economically address the structural challenges and wind-related issues in a timely manner while maintaining visual appeal, LCW needed an integrated bridge design and analysis software.

LCW decided to use cable-stay construction for the viaduct design using a single central row of cable stays for the 300-meter central span, box girder decks, and single shaft piers to accommodate the height of the structure while preserving the view of the valley. Given the height of the viaduct, it was pertinent that LCW evaluate the geometrical shape of each section to mitigate wind factors. RM Bridge enabled LCW to conduct these evaluations and to analyze and adjust cable stay forces to control displacement during construction.

RM Bridge’s flexibility in calculating cable forces throughout the design and construction phases optimized cable tension and allowed for adjustments in the construction schedule. RM Bridge also enabled LCW to conduct wind tunnel tests to evaluate geometrical shape and anticipate potential problems. The outcome was an enormous savings of time and money, minimizing breaks in work production and resulting in high quality construction, risk reduction and enhanced transportation nationally.
Using RM Bridge, LCW was able to overcome complex engineering challenges and contribute to Portugal’s National Road plan while preserving a coveted view of the Corgo Valley. Designing a long span cable-stayed bridge, LCW relied on RM Bridge to calculate and adjust cable forces timely and efficiently. The software also enabled LCW to evaluate the shape of the different sections of the structure, simulate wind testing, and analyze buffeting to ensure aerodynamic stability, reducing risk and enhancing quality.
