Project
Having been involved in over 500 water industry and design construction projects, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) recognized the need for a step change in its information management to sustain corporate growth and meet and exceed client expectations. MMB focused its efforts on creating a digital component catalogue (DCC), understanding the needs of stakeholders working in a common data environment, and streamlining process engineering. To facilitate this approach, MMB needed to successfully integrate ProjectWise with OpenPlant PID.
Solution
Using ProjectWise as the cornerstone of its information management strategy, MMB created a water-specific digital library containing over 4,000 high quality, reusable BIM objects accessible to all users through a single location, the DCC. Capitalizing on Mott MacDonald’s common data environment, MMB adopted a standardized approach using ProjectWise to establish a “Common Way of Working” that allowed the rapid deployment of pre-defined templates to projects around the globe. MMB used Bentley’s interoperable OpenPlant PID to facilitate a seamless flow of information from design through commissioning that could be integrated with the common data environment, providing a single source for asset data.
Outcome
Integrating ProjectWise with OpenPlant PID introduced rigor into the management of BIM project information to improve the flow of information throughout all stages of the projects. The centralized and standardized approach to content using the DCC optimized consistency and efficiency in BIM deliverables, while working in a common data environment significantly reduced project start-up time. Bentley solutions saved MMB GBP 20,000 in design changes on a recent reservoir project for Yorkshire Water. The interoperability of OpenPlant PID facilitated accurate, open asset data exchange with clients, reducing errors and costly rework.
Software
The availability of intelligent components from the DCC through well-structured data in ProjectWise, coupled with working in a common data environment, enables quick accommodation of design changes, reducing errors and onsite costs. Using OpenPlant PID facilitated cross-pollination of P&ID datasets with third-party 3D software by establishing a simple interface, liberating historically buried data and ensuring data consistency. The interoperability of ProjectWise and OpenPlant PID supports users of different software platforms and provided MMB a single source of data for developing the digital content system and optimizing information management. The adoption of a BIM methodology also greatly contributed to the consult’s ability to grow double in size in a just over two years.
