Project
Octapharma’s life-saving human plasma products help with intensive care, emergency medicine, and many chronic diseases. The main goal of this USD 26 million project in Charlotte, North Carolina, was to replace outsourced testing operations and expand internal warehouse and processing capabilities, which would save Octapharma USD 1 million per month. With this amount of money on the line, meeting the tight schedule was crucial on this project.
Solution
Fitzpatrick Engineering Group realized that keeping the steel data in 3D as long as possible was critical to meeting the schedule. With AECOsim Building Designer’s enhanced CIS/2 export, Fitzpatrick Engineering Group could share accurate model data repeatedly with the detailer. This iterative workflow ensured the detailer had the most accurate and up-to-date information and virtually eliminated the need for the detailer to recreate data from 2D documents.
Outcome
Fitzpatrick Engineering Group was able to compress the construction schedule by eight weeks, by sharing accurate structural model data early and often with the detailer in the design phase. And with accurate data in an accessible format, the detailer eliminated errors reentering and recreating data. As a result, Fitzpatrick Engineering Group needed about one-third less time to review the fabrication package.
Software
Using Bentley software, Fitzpatrick Engineering Group was able to implement a better, more efficient way to deliver structural steel on-time and help Octapharma save USD 2 million. Fitzpatrick Engineering Group used RAM Structural System for analysis, AECOsim Building Designer for design and modeling, and MicroStation PowerDraft for drafting. The integration between RAM Structural System and AECOsim Building Designer helped shorten the time needed to prepare construction documents, and Bentley software’s interoperability made it easy for Fitzpatrick Engineering Group to collaborate with design and construction teams who used Revit.
