Seafield Wastewater Treatment Works Thermal Hydrolysis Plant

Project Summary

The primary goal of MWH’s GBP 14 million Seafield Wastewater Treatment project was to enhance treated sludge prior to entering the digestion system. The unique engineering challenges of the project included the requirement to run all pipework and cabling above ground and the need to build the new plant in the tight space while keeping the existing plant running. The team also needed to manage the interface between process pipework, odor control ducting, and cable trays to allow them to share the same above ground support system.

MWH chose OpenPlant to enable the team to quickly create specification-driven pipework and model the above ground pipework. The team then shared the model with the process pipework fabricator, odor control supplier, and cable-routing subcontractor, and used the 3D model to review changes to the pipework in the 3D model, instead of issuing and checking a multitude of 2D drawings. MWH used the 3D engineering model to review the design with all stakeholders, including construction and operations, so all parties were able to offer feedback early in the process.

Sharing the pipework model directly with the supplier not only enabled the supplier to make the design more cost effective, but also eliminated the need to issue drawings, saving one to two weeks approval time for each. Issuing the 3D model directly to the pipework fabricator removed the need for detailed pipework drawings, saving about a month of drafting time. Integrating the OpenPlant model with virtual reality head-mounted displays made it easy to spot clashes prior to construction, and allowed operations and maintenance to be immersed in the model during design review.

In addition to OpenPlant, MWH used AECOsim Building Designer, AutoPLANT, MicroStation, Bentley Navigator, and ProjectWise on this project. The design team also used Bentley Navigator to view 3D models during the internal review and with the client’s operations staff. Navigator Mobile Publisher created mobile i-models that site personnel accessed via iPads to review the 3D site model.
